AI agents, explained without the hype
What an agent actually is, how it’s different from a chatbot, and where it’s worth using one right now.

“AI agent” might be the most overused phrase on the internet right now. Every tool has one. Every thread promises one will run your business. So let’s cut through it.
So what is an agent, really?
Strip away the marketing and an agent is three things: a language model, a set of tools it’s allowed to use, and a loop. You give it a goal, it decides what to do next, uses a tool, looks at the result, and decides again — until the job’s done or it gets stuck.
That loop is the whole difference. A chatbot answers. An agent acts.
Agent vs. automation
A normal automation follows a fixed recipe: when X happens, do Y, then Z. It’s fast, cheap and predictable. An agent gets to choose the steps. That’s more flexible, but also less predictable — which is why the best setups usually combine both. Let the automation handle the boring, fixed parts and hand only the messy, judgment-call parts to the agent.
Where agents are actually useful
Sorting and replying to inbound messages. Researching a lead before a call. Turning a messy brain-dump into tasks in your project tool. Anything where a human would normally read something, make a small decision, and click a few buttons.
Start small
Don’t build a do-everything agent on day one. Give it one job, two or three tools, and a clear way to say “I’m not sure.” Watch what it does for a week. Then give it more. Boring agents that work beat impressive agents that don’t.
